Forecasters Predict Active Atlantic Hurricane Season
Hurricane Forecasters say they expect an active 2007 hurricane season. Chief Hurricane Forecaster Joe Bastardi at the respected weather centre ACCU Weather, also cautions that this season, hurricanes and tropical storms are likely to pose a far greater threat than last year to lives and property.
According to the AccuWeather.com forecast, of the 13 to 14 storms likely in the Atlantic Basin three or more are likely to be major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater.
Bastardi also spoke of what he referred to as climatological patterns that are expected to impact this year’s hurricane season. He said these include The occurrence of a weak La Niña in the wake of an El Niño at the end of last year, the current warm water cycle that is occurring in the area of the Atlantic as well as forecast precipitation and air pressure patterns expected during hurricane season and forecast air pressure oscillations over the Pacific, and diminished dry air over the tropical Atlantic.
Many of the climatological patterns currently occurring or projected for this hurricane season are similar to those of the 1930s through the 1950s, which was a period marked by frenzied hurricane activity.
This year's storms will be named: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dean, Erin, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Noel, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy
